South Korean semiconductor industry expansion

Overview

South Korea is expanding its semiconductor manufacturing sector through private investment and large-scale government-led initiatives.

Hanmi Semiconductor is investing 130 billion won to establish its eighth manufacturing plant in Incheon to meet demand for AI and High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) equipment, with mass production targeted for the second quarter of 2027.

In the Honam region, Jeonnam Gwangju Integrated Special City and SK hynix are collaborating to establish a regional production hub. Discussions between Mayor Min Hyeong-bae and SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung focused on developing a national industrial complex at the Gwangju military airport site. The plan involves breaking ground on four semiconductor fabs across approximately 2.5 million pyeong, aiming for mass production by 2030. To support this, the region is launching the ‘Honam Region Regional Autonomous R&D Project,’ allocating 13.1 billion won this year to develop AI-based advanced packaging and high-reliability power semiconductor technologies.

Additionally, the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) is advancing the Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex. LH has scheduled preliminary works, including logging and cultural heritage surveys, to begin this October. Land compensation is nearly complete, with 99% of the target area processed. The complex, covering approximately 7.78 million square meters, will eventually feature six fabs, supporting infrastructure for materials and equipment, and three power generation facilities. LH aims to finalize all compensation processes within the year to maintain the goal of breaking ground on the first fab by 2028.
