South Korean special prosecutor investigation
Overview
A six-month investigation led by Special Prosecutor Kwon Chang-young has moved toward its conclusion, focusing on allegations of insurrection, presidential residence renovation irregularities, and stock manipulation.
Initially, the probe targeted several high-profile figures, including First Lady Kim Keon-hee regarding preferential treatment in renovation contracts, and former National Intelligence Service officials concerning efforts to justify martial law. The investigation also examined the Yangpyeong highway route changes and Deutsche Motors stock manipulation.
Following the investigation, the special prosecution team indicted 58 individuals, including 7 people held in custody and 51 others released on bail. Notable indictments include the corporation 21gram, linked to allegations of interference in the presidential residence, as well as former Defense Counterintelligence Command Commander Yeo In-hyeong and former Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Kim Oh-jin. This follows earlier June indictments involving former Presidential Chief of Staff Kim Dae-gi regarding the misappropriation of residence budgets.
