Overview

The late‑July 2026 heat wave ignited massive wildfires in France and Spain, burning roughly 115,000 ha in France and 172,000 ha in Spain—six times the area burned a year earlier. Pyrocumulonimbus fire clouds generated strong winds and lightning, spreading embers up to 60 mi from the fronts. The EU Emergency Coordination Centre activated a 24‑hour response, coordinating assistance from about ten member states and using Copernicus satellite imagery to produce high‑accuracy fire maps.

Initial evacuations reached about 130,000 people across France, Spain and Turkey, where dozens of new blazes erupted. French President Emmanuel Macron described the blaze as the most severe crisis since World II, and scientists warned that rising temperatures will make such fire‑cloud events more common.

By 30 July, evacuation numbers had risen to over 300,000 across France and Spain as the fire clouds intensified. The EU response remained in place, with continued satellite monitoring and multinational firefighting support, while national emergencies and military assistance persisted in the affected countries.

On 1 August, Greece reported more than 70 forest and brush fires under hot, dry, windy conditions. Authorities ordered evacuations of the coastal resort of Porto Germeno and nearby villages, rescued twelve people by boat, and transferred 17 psychiatric patients as flames approached Athens’s western suburbs; three Greek firefighters were killed. In France, the Provence blaze continued to burn about 4,500 ha despite the effort of roughly 1,300 firefighters, forcing around 2,500 residents to stay away from their homes and prompting heat alerts across 20 departments. A separate fire near Bordeaux, which had scorched 420 km² of pine forest, was brought under control.
