S&P Global DeFi risk assessment integration
Overview
S&P Global Ratings introduced the Vault Risk Assessment (VRA) framework to evaluate impairment risks in blockchain-based digital asset lending vaults. This methodology analyzes six categories, including portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatch, and protocol risk, using a letter-based scale. The initiative follows significant growth in the sector, with on-chain lending vault deposits rising from approximately $1.5 billion in 2024 to $10 billion by September 2026.
Following the framework launch, Chainlink integrated these assessments onchain, starting with the Base blockchain. This integration uses Chainlink DataLink and the Chainlink Runtime Environment to publish S&P Global Ratings’ VRA data via a decentralized oracle network, providing independent risk analysis to institutional and decentralized finance services.
