Overview

By early September 2026, a significant heatwave driven by an anticyclone and warm air from North Africa has intensified across the Iberian Peninsula. A heat dome is affecting much of Spain, with 41 provinces across 15 autonomous communities under various weather alerts. AEMET has issued orange warnings for Córdoba, Jaén, and Sevilla, where temperatures in the Guadalquivir and Guadiana valleys were expected to reach 42°C.

On September 4, AEMET reported that Spain recorded its highest temperature of the year, reaching 45.7°C in El Granado, Andalusia. This figure matches the previous September record set in 2016 in Montoro. Additionally, Albacete Base Aérea hit a new September record of 39.3°C. The period from January to August has been the hottest on record for mainland Spain.

In response to the extreme conditions, AEMET activated a red alert in parts of Andalusia, marking the first such alert issued in September since the current warning system was established in 2007.

The extreme heat has also impacted Portugal. The IPMA reported that September 3, 2026, was the fourth warmest September day in 85 years, with Alcochete reaching a maximum of 44.3°C. Across Spain, temperatures near or exceeding 40°C have been reported in Huesca, Navarra, and Catalonia. In Catalonia, authorities have warned of increased forest fire risks due to high temperatures and low humidity.

The current heatwave is driven by a combination of a low-pressure system southwest of the peninsula and high pressure over North Africa and the Alboran Sea. Experts attribute the increasing intensity and frequency of such heatwaves to human-induced climate change.
