Spain and Portugal electric mobility development

Efforts to expand electric mobility and technological integration in the Iberian Peninsula have progressed through cross-border partnerships and increased infrastructure funding.

Initial developments focused on enhancing mobility between Spain and Portugal. A partnership between Iberdrola | bp pulse and Electromaps was established to allow Spanish drivers to locate and pay for charging sessions within the Portuguese network. Additionally, the EU-funded ‘Quantum Iberia’ project began integrating quantum technologies and artificial intelligence to support regional development along the Spanish-Portuguese border.

Subsequent actions in Spain have focused on large-scale infrastructure and international investment. The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) launched a 150 million euro program to install over 2,600 public charging points on Spanish highways. Meanwhile, the regional government of Extremadura initiated a mission to several Chinese cities to attract investments in electric mobility, green hydrogen, and renewable energy.
