Spain expands municipal video surveillance

In late July 2026, two Spanish cities began modest upgrades to their public‑safety camera systems. Barakaldo installed a small suite of equipment – two cameras, radar detectors, a recorder and speakers – at a sports complex, while Marbella added eight new cameras to bring its municipal network to 352 devices as part of a €4 million fiber‑optic and surveillance investment supporting a new Proximity Police Unit.

A few days later, larger‑scale projects were announced. Badalona launched a €27 million tender to deploy 615 cameras city‑wide, including a control room, crisis centre and artificial‑intelligence tools for footage analysis. In the province of Guadalajara, Telefónica España won a €4.5 million contract to install more than 350 surveillance points across 170 rural municipalities, each equipped with optical‑character‑recognition licence‑plate readers and high‑definition cameras linked via 4G/5G to a cloud platform for the Guardia Civil.

Together, these actions show a rapid scaling of video‑surveillance infrastructure across Spain, moving from localized upgrades to extensive city‑wide networks that incorporate advanced analytics and cloud‑based management to bolster public‑safety capabilities.
