Spain football trip transparency probes

In late July 2026, Spanish parliamentary and political actors began scrutinising the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s (RFEF) practice of inviting public officials to high‑profile FIFA events in the United States.

The first inquiry, raised by members of the Sumar parliamentary group, asked the government to reveal the nature of the invitation extended to Valencian president Juanfran Pérez Llorca for the World Cup final in New York, including ticket value and who covered travel and accommodation. Pérez Llorca maintains he paid for the trip himself, while the RFEF says it provided only an invitation and no costs.

A week later, the left‑wing party Izquierda Unida lodged a similar request concerning El Puerto mayor Germán Beardo’s attendance at the FIFA Club World Cup final in the United States. The request seeks details on the invitation, ticket price, travel expenses and any companions, and raises concerns about a potential conflict of interest given a €5.4 million sponsorship deal between the provincial government and Cádiz CF.

Both cases illustrate growing parliamentary and party pressure in Spain for greater transparency around the allocation of complimentary football tickets and the use of public resources for officials’ attendance at international sporting events.
