Overview

The wildfire that ignited around 13:00 on 30 July 2026 in the Parque Natural de los Arribes del Duero near the Picón area on the Tormes slope near Fermoselle, Zamora, has burned roughly 11 000 hectares and was classified as IGR level‑2. Roughly 40 firefighting resources, including four aircraft, were deployed on the southern and western fronts, while the northern and eastern fronts stabilised overnight.

Fourteen villages were evacuated, displacing about 800 residents, among them roughly 80 elderly people from a local care home who were moved to sports halls and other shelters. Additional evacuations of Villar del Buey and Pasariegos took place during the night, with senior residents transferred to a facility in Zamora.

The Unidad Militar de Emergencias established a coordination base in Vitigudino. Support came from Cantabria (ten firefighters and two environmental agents) and a Qatari contingent that arrived with 79 specialists, expected to grow to 130 personnel.

Strong winds and high temperatures kept the southern and western fronts active. Power outages, road closures and loss of mobile coverage affected parts of the Sayago comarca. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and suppression operations continue under close monitoring.
