Spain trail safety upgrades
Overview
In late July 2026 the Junta de Andalucía began constructing a 51‑metre elevated bridge on the Punta del Boquerón trail in the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park. The work, funded by the Plan Andalucía Actúa, aims to replace storm‑damaged walkways, protect the dune‑marsh ecosystem and restore safe access for the thousands of visitors who use the 2.5‑km path each year.
A week later, Spanish authorities announced further safety improvements on two separate routes. In Málaga province the El Caminito del Rey tourist trail opened a new hanging bridge—the longest in Spain—that lowers temperatures, removes a series of stairs and eases emergency evacuations for older visitors, children and people with reduced mobility. In the city of Alcalá de Henares, a deteriorated wooden staircase at the main fairground entrance was replaced with a concrete structure and new railings, providing a more durable and safer pedestrian route ahead of the 2026 fairs.
Together these actions illustrate a coordinated effort across regional and municipal governments in Spain to modernise and secure popular walking and tourist routes, addressing both environmental resilience and visitor accessibility.
