Spanish business payment and delinquency trends

Reports indicate that payment delays and delinquency are impacting the financial health and growth of Spanish companies. According to Intrum’s 2026 European Payment Report, 60% of consumer-oriented firms in Spain accept payment delays to maintain customer relationships. In the retail sector, the average payment period reaches 34.4 days, with 57% of Spanish companies admitting that late payments from customers force them to delay payments to their own suppliers.

Research by Crédito y Caución and Iberinform suggests delinquency acts as a brake on commercial expansion, with 21% of participating companies stating that non-payment limits growth and 8.1% facing risks to business continuity. Additionally, 70% of businesses must accept longer payment terms than desired to maintain B2B client portfolios.

In contrast to these broader commercial challenges, regional data from the Ministry of Finance shows high efficiency in public sector payments within certain autonomous communities. For June, Galicia and Andalusia led the country in supplier payment efficiency, recording average payment periods of 15.3 and 15.4 days respectively. Both regions remain significantly below the 30-day legal limit established by national regulations.
