Spanish digital transformation and data intelligence

Overview

Spanish academic, governmental, and regional institutions are advancing various digital transformation and data management initiatives.

In Cádiz, the City Council and the University of Cádiz are collaborating on the ‘Data Lakehouse’ research project under the EDINT initiative. This project seeks to utilize a ‘Data Space for Smart Urban Infrastructures’ to improve urban innovation, business competitiveness, and public services. Similarly, in Castilla-La Mancha, the University of Castilla-La Mancha and the regional government have established the Institutional Chair of Data Intelligence as part of a strategic plan for 2026-2030, focusing on research in artificial intelligence, data governance, and public statistics.

Regional governments are also investing heavily in specialized data systems. The Canary Islands government has authorized 37.23 million euros to implement a unified Electronic Health Record (MAGEC HCE) to improve clinical interoperability and integrate advanced analytics. In Madrid, 22 million euros have been approved for the second phase of the Unique Social History (HSU) and Advanced Home Telecare project, which unifies social, health, housing, and economic data to support remote assistance for dependent individuals.
