Spanish government fiscal allocations
Overview
The Spanish government has issued several royal decrees to allocate funding for essential public services and infrastructure for the upcoming fiscal periods.
In October 2026, the government approved 363.7 million euros to support public transport systems. Under Royal Decree 826/2026, funds are distributed among the Barcelona Metropolitan Transport Authority, the Madrid Regional Transport Consortium, the Canary Islands, and the Valencia Metropolitan Transport Authority to maintain regular passenger services.
Through Royal Decree 854/2026, the government allocated approximately 17 million euros to sustain 1,135 medical degree places in public universities for the 2026-2027 academic year. This funding, set at 15,000 euros per place, is intended to cover teaching and operational costs for existing second, third, and fourth-year students as part of a strategy to bolster the National Health System. The specific breakdown includes 683 places for second-year students, 305 for third-year students, and 147 for fourth-year students. While the decree addresses shortages in specialties like Family and Community Medicine, it does not include funding for new entry positions, which has been deferred to the next fiscal year due to budget constraints.
By late October 2026, the Council of Ministers confirmed that no funding would be provided for the increase in first-year medical school places for budgetary reasons. This decision requires the University of Granada to use its own resources to cover 277 new student enrollments. Additionally, the Ministry of Health announced the 2027 Specialized Health Training examinations, offering 12,850 positions across disciplines including Medicine (MIR), Nursing (EIR), Pharmacy (FIR), and Psychology (PIR), scheduled for January 23, 2027.
