Spanish memorial gardens for perinatal loss
Overview
Municipalities in Spain are establishing dedicated memorial spaces, referred to as ‘Garden of the Stars’, to support families experiencing perinatal and neonatal loss.
In Málaga, the San Gabriel Cemetery inaugurated a 1,500-square-meter green space featuring a central fountain shaped like the Ursa Major constellation. This project, a collaboration with the Official College of Nursing of Málaga, allows families to deposit ashes in designated areas and provides access to specialized grief counseling through a municipal psychology cabinet.
Similarly, the town of Miguelturra scheduled the opening of its own ‘Garden of the Stars’ to coincide with the International Day of Gestational, Perinatal, and Neonatal Death. Developed with the association Meciendo Estrellas Castilla-La Mancha, this memorial includes a light stone monolith with metal stars and symbolic imagery intended to provide a respectful environment for reflection and visibility for grieving families.
