Spanish municipal demonstrations regarding Ceuta
Overview
The Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), led by María José García Pelayo, organized a nationwide mobilization across Spain to show support for Ceuta. The movement included over two hundred demonstrations in various cities and towns, occurring alongside a planned parliamentary intervention by Pedro Sánchez. The PSOE reportedly requested that its municipal representatives abstain from the events.
In response to the FEMP rally, the municipal group Compromís per Oliva announced it would participate in a local institutional act at the Oliva town hall agreed upon by all local political forces, but would reject the separate FEMP concentration. Compromís criticized the FEMP presidency for making a “unilateral” decision and using the institution for partisan strategies. Spokesperson Yolanda Navarro stated that while the group supports Ceuta, they advocate for structural solutions through the Spanish State and the European Union, warning against using border sovereignty to “fuel xenophobic discourse or criminalize migrants.”
