Spanish municipal heritage safety closures

In late July 2026, the town council of Sant Cugat fenced off the historic chimney of the former Jesuit pottery and began technical studies—including interior inspection, photogrammetric surveying and structural monitoring—to assess its stability. At the same time, Lleida’s urban discipline department ordered the closure of Carmelites street after parts of a building façade detached, citing safety hazards.

By early August, Sant Cugat continued the same inspection work, cutting a new opening to view the chimney interior while maintaining the perimeter fence. The municipality’s actions were reported alongside a separate initiative in Palma, where the city council started evacuating residents from a former prison site, planning to complete the clearance by year‑end. The developments show Spanish local authorities increasingly securing hazardous historic structures and, where necessary, relocating occupants to address public safety concerns.
