Spanish municipal honors for Ceuta

Overview

Spanish municipalities have begun issuing honors to recognize the people and authorities of Ceuta following recent challenges at the southern border.

On September 17, Valencia announced it would award its Medalla de Honor to the people of Ceuta. Mayor María José Catalá stated the award recognizes the “dignity, resilience, and steadfast defense of identity and Spain” shown by the residents, particularly in response to mass migration challenges faced in late July. The Mayor noted the gesture also serves to strengthen bonds between the territories following the 2024 DANA weather event.

Following this, on September 22, the Seville City Council’s Governing Council approved a proposal to grant the City Medal to the Ceuta Local Police. The initiative aims to highlight the “professional dignity and commitment” of officers working in the sensitive geographic area of the southern border. The proposal is currently awaiting final ratification by the Seville City Council Plenary.
