Spanish municipal pool summer season closures

Municipal swimming pools in various Spanish regions have concluded their summer operations. In Argamasilla de Calatrava and Manzanares, officials reported successful seasons characterized by facility improvements, such as renovations, new shade areas, and water conservation measures. Argamasilla de Calatrava recorded approximately 6,000 entries, while Manzanares saw about 33,000 visitors.

In Lleida, the season ended amid temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. Although users expressed satisfaction with the services, residents have requested an extension of the opening period to better accommodate extreme heatwaves.

Recent record-breaking heatwaves in September have further complicated pool management across the Iberian Peninsula and Andorra. In Andorra, meteorologist Guillem Martín described the current heatwave as ‘unprecedented,’ noting it is the sixth such episode this year. On September 3, temperatures in La Comella reached 34.1 degrees Celsius, breaking the previous September record of 31.4 degrees. The extreme heat has also impacted local infrastructure, with the FEDA hydroelectric plant reporting 43 days with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees.

In Catalonia, temperatures have reached extreme levels, with Vinebre recording 42.5 degrees Celsius and Alcarràs reaching 41.2 degrees. These conditions have triggered level 3 fire danger alerts in several municipalities, leading to the closure of certain natural spaces. In Spain, temperatures have reached 42.5 degrees Celsius in Flix. These extreme conditions have prompted local authorities to reconsider pool management, as facilities serve as vital climate refuges. While some municipalities continue to close pools following the school calendar, others are extending their seasons to provide relief during intense heat.
