Spanish political rivalry and policy criticism

Political tensions in Spain have intensified through sharp critiques from People's Party (PP) deputy Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo against the ruling Socialist Party (PSOE). During a pre-campaign event, Álvarez de Toledo characterized the PSOE as being in a moral and political crisis, describing the party as “dead” and suggesting it must choose between “refoundation or extinction.” She further labeled President Pedro Sánchez a “pathetic populist.” In response, PSOE candidate Adriana Lastra rejected these criticisms, defending her political role as a commitment to workers' rights and equality.

Following these exchanges, Álvarez de Toledo shifted her focus toward government policy, specifically regarding drug trafficking and border security. During visits to Cádiz, she argued that narcotics trafficking along the Andalusian coast constitutes a challenge to democracy and a state problem. She proposed increasing resources, reforming the Penal Code, and establishing a regional anti-narcotics unit.

In a subsequent event in Jerez, Álvarez de Toledo expanded her criticisms of Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares. She accused the Minister of representing Moroccan interests over Spanish ones and claimed he is “complicit in the migration surge in Ceuta.” She also criticized his refusal to comply with Supreme Court orders concerning the disclosure of fraudulent nationality applications, while reiterating the need for a stronger state to combat coastal drug trafficking.
