Spanish school-related social media harassment

Overview

Spanish authorities have issued warnings regarding the rise of ‘curis’ accounts on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. These anonymous profiles use the names, logos, or acronyms of specific schools to share memes, drawings, and videos related to classroom life.

While some content is intended as humor, the Spanish National Police warn that these accounts are increasingly used to ridicule, humiliate, or harass students and teachers through physical mockery, rumors, or defamatory montages. Authorities note that individuals can often be identified through nicknames or caricatures even without the use of full names. Such actions may constitute crimes against moral integrity or serious insults, potentially leading to criminal and civil liabilities.

In the Valencian Community, specific protocols under Decree 193/2025 address these digital aggressions. The regional Ministry of Education has implemented this regulation to handle cyberbullying and attacks against educators, even those occurring outside school grounds. Under this regulation, insults or threats directed at teachers performing their duties are classified as serious offenses, potentially leading to disciplinary proceedings, temporary expulsion, loss of recreational time, or changes in school assignment. Law enforcement advises victims to preserve evidence via screenshots and to report content to both platforms and local police. Responses to these reports are already being coordinated across various regions, including La Rioja, Mallorca, and Córdoba.
