Spanish telecommunications WiFi 7 router rollout

Overview

Initially, O2 announced it would provide WiFi 7 routers to all customers at no additional cost, following similar actions by Movistar and Digi. The hardware, a Home Gateway Unit (HGU), was intended to improve speed and stability for activities like gaming and streaming.

However, subsequent reports indicate a shift in implementation for O2 and Digi. Rather than a massive free rollout, O2 described the technology as being in a “limited pilot phase” to ensure network stability. Under these updated conditions, upgrading to WiFi 7 routers requires a fee, with O2 charging starting at 60 euros for self-installation. Digi offers upgrades ranging from 30 to 60 euros.

Furthermore, these devices are provided as temporary loans. Customers do not own the equipment and must return the routers upon contract termination to avoid penalties, such as O2’s 97.3 euro charge or Digi’s compensation fees of 50 to 150 euros.
