Spanish tunnel emergency response drills
Overview
Emergency services and railway operators in Spain have conducted large-scale simulations to test safety protocols and coordination in various tunnel infrastructures.
In the Das Maceiras Tunnel on the Vigo-Redondela section, Adif and Renfe performed a drill simulating a passenger train fire. The exercise involved simulating the evacuation of approximately 90 travelers and the rescue of injured persons to evaluate operational management and coordination between railway services and security forces.
Similarly, emergency services conducted a simulation in the Vielha Joan Carles I tunnel to test the infrastructure’s Self-Protection Plan. This drill modeled a vehicle accident and subsequent fire, assessing the coordination between the Aran Firefighters, Civil Protection, Mossos d’Esquadra, and the Medical Emergency System.
