Sporting and solidarity events in Umbria

In the Umbria region of Italy, a series of sporting and solidarity events were organized to support healthcare and social causes.

Initial reports highlighted a national handbike race in Santa Maria degli Angeli intended to memorialize Gino Fragola and Pierino Partenza, serving as a qualifying stage for the Coppa Italia. Concurrently, the ‘Cuore in campo’ charity football match was scheduled in Prepo to raise funds for the Serafico Institute in Assisi, specifically to support its suspended therapy program for low-income individuals.

Following these activities, the ‘Cuore in Campo’ event in Perugia concluded after a three-day period. The manifestation expanded to include a ‘Solidarity Match’ between a national team of Italian actors and the Vecchie Glorie del Grifo. The program also integrated a Festival of Sports Law at the Palazzo dei Priori, which addressed topics such as regulations, legality, and ethics in sports, alongside medical and nutritional prevention initiatives.

Building on these efforts, the UC Petrignano cycling club organized a record-breaking event in Santa Maria degli Angeli dedicated to cycling for people with disabilities. The competition included handbike, tandem, cycling, and tricycle categories, featuring over 100 participants. This event served as a stage for the Coppa Italia società and included the sixth ‘Memorial Gino Fragola’ and the eighth ‘Memorial Pierino Partenza’. Club President Orlando Ranucci noted the growing number of athletes participating each year, and former cycling champion Gianbattista Baronchelli attended as a guest.
