Sportivo Ameliano media dress code controversy

Overview

Paraguayan First Division football club Sportivo Ameliano implemented a controversial dress code policy targeting female media professionals, including photographers, journalists, and camera operators. The regulations, introduced ahead of a match against Olimpia, prohibited female staff from wearing low-cut tops, leggings in colors other than black or dark blue, or clothing that exposed the midriff or navel.

The club initially defended the mandate by stating it was a ‘family club with strong values’ due to the presence of youth academy players and parents. The policy was reportedly triggered by the attire of sports photographer Adriana Caballero, who defended her right to wear clothing suited to her professional comfort.

Following widespread criticism, club president Héctor Melgarejo rescinded the policy and issued an apology. Melgarejo described the situation as ‘crazy’ and clarified that the directive was implemented by a club official without the authorization or approval of the executive office or the board.
