Spurious liquor crisis in Bhavnagar, Gujarat

Overview

A deadly incident involving suspected spurious liquor in the Bhavnagar district of Gujarat has resulted in multiple fatalities and hospitalizations. Initial reports indicated at least seven deaths and approximately 30 hospitalizations following the consumption of counterfeit alcohol bearing the Royal Stag brand label. Chemical analysis of a seized bottle revealed a methanol content of 38.59 percent.

Investigations by the Bhavnagar police and the State Monitoring Cell suggested the toxic liquor was manufactured in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, before being distributed in the region. Authorities registered an FIR against 21 individuals, detained 12 suspected bootleggers, and suspended four police personnel.

As the situation progressed, the death toll rose to at least eight, with 25 individuals receiving medical treatment and 61 total people affected. Local administrative officials, including Sub-Divisional Magistrate Akshar Vyas, confirmed that blood samples have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for further analysis to determine the exact cause and facilitate subsequent administrative actions.
