SS145VAR tunnel flooding and repair in Campania

Overview

On September 25, severe weather triggered a landslide near the ‘Santa Maria di Pozzano’ tunnel on the SS145VAR in the Sorrento Peninsula. The landslide caused significant flooding, with mud, debris, and water covering more than half of the 5.1 km tunnel near Castellammare di Stabia.

In response, Anas initiated emergency procedures and activated a bypass via the former SS145 and the Seiano tunnel to maintain traffic flow. Technical inspections were conducted to address the damage and restore the tunnel’s fire prevention system.

By October 15, the tunnel fully reopened, restoring regular traffic between Castellammare di Stabia and Vico Equense. Anas completed repairs to the safety systems ahead of schedule after acquiring specialized components. The temporary bypass was deactivated following the restoration of the tunnel’s functionality.
