Starlink satellite internet service expansion

Overview

Starlink, operated by SpaceX, provides global internet coverage through a mega-constellation of over 10,200 small satellites in low Earth orbit. The service is designed to offer stable connectivity in remote or maritime environments where traditional infrastructure is unavailable.

In response to community complaints regarding roaming restrictions and the discontinuation of previous global options, SpaceX introduced a ‘Personal Maritime’ plan. Priced at $185 per month, this plan offers unlimited data for personal, small watercraft within 12 nautical miles of coastlines worldwide. For travel into international waters beyond that limit, an ‘Ocean Mode’ is available.

Following feedback from the boating community regarding length restrictions, SpaceX updated the Personal Maritime plan to accommodate larger vessels by increasing the maximum eligible watercraft length from 40 feet to 60 feet. To qualify, users must submit documentation, such as a vessel registration certificate.

While the monthly subscription remains $185, the cost of ‘Ocean Mode’ for service beyond 12 nautical miles from the coast has increased from $2 per GB to $6 per GB.
