State Bank of India BSBD account rule revisions

Overview

State Bank of India (SBI) has announced revisions to the rules governing Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) accounts, scheduled to take effect on October 1, 2026.

Under the new policy, customers will be permitted four free cash withdrawals per month. Transactions exceeding this limit will incur a charge of ₹15 plus applicable GST per withdrawal. The bank is also updating how the monthly limit is calculated; specifically, Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS) transactions, which were previously excluded from the free limit, will now be counted toward the four-transaction threshold.

While branch-based cash withdrawals will face these new limits, SBI stated that all digital transactions will remain free and unrestricted. The BSBD account is a zero-balance maintenance account that includes a basic RuPay ATM-cum-debit card. Holders of this account are prohibited from maintaining any other savings accounts with the bank and must close existing accounts within 30 days of opening a BSBD account.
