Steam Next Fest 2026: Record Demos and AI Concerns
Overview
The October 2026 edition of Steam Next Fest has concluded with a record-breaking scale, featuring more than 8,000 playable demos—approximately double the number featured during the June edition. Organized by Valve, the festival ran from October 19 to 26, offering access to a massive collection of unreleased titles.
While the event provided a platform for diverse genres, it highlighted industry-wide concerns regarding generative AI and plagiarism. The proportion of games disclosing AI use rose from roughly 20 percent in June to approximately 33 percent during this festival. This surge has sparked fears of “AI slop” and “cheap AI junk,” characterized by low-effort, AI-generated assets. Developers expressed concern that high-quality indie projects are being overshadowed by “vibe coding”—using large language models to generate functional code—and the rapid creation of AI-driven clones. These fears regarding intellectual property theft led some studios to withdraw to protect original concepts from being quickly imitated.
Amidst these tensions, several titles gained significant traction. The dystopian simulator ‘Probably Stolen - Cyberpunk Shopkeeper Sim’ by Questing Goose Studio, set in a world controlled by AI, and the horror-themed extraction shooter ‘HUNGER’ by Good Fun Corporation, which reached over 16,300 concurrent players, were among the notable successes. Valve released a list of the 20 most-played demos, which included an eclectic mix such as ‘ArcheAge Chronicles’, ‘Emberville’, ‘Fart Together’, and ‘Worst Class Ever’.
