Street Fighter film release and reception

Overview

The upcoming Street Fighter film, directed by Kitao Sakurai, has moved from promotional reveals to its theatrical release. Early marketing focused on character portrayals, such as David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, with the production shifting its release date from March 2026 to October 16, 2026.

The film’s narrative is set in 1993 and follows Ryu, a former champion living in seclusion, and Ken Masters, who has used his fighting skills to gain wealth. The plot involves Interpol agent Chun-Li attempting to infiltrate the Shadaloo organization led by M. Bison, who organizes a tournament in Metrolao to draw Ryu out of hiding.

Upon release, critical reception has been mixed. While the film’s visual trailers generated significant interest, some reviewers have criticized the creative direction, noting that the attempt at a “maximalist, campy aesthetic” may be undermined by formulaic dialogue and inconsistent visual storytelling.
