Student activism and political shifts in North Macedonia

Overview

In North Macedonia, Albanian students have initiated protests demanding the right to take jurisprudence exams entirely in the Albanian language. While Justice Minister Jeton Shasivari proposed a model allowing 12 subjects to be taken in Albanian and two in Macedonian with translators, student leaders, including Mevlan Ademi, have rejected the proposal as an incomplete solution. The Ministry of Justice intends to consult the Venice Commission regarding these linguistic rights.

Broader discussions have emerged regarding the role of students and intellectuals as drivers of social change in the region. These reflections contrast the perceived disillusionment of Macedonian students with the active youth movements seen in neighboring countries, framing historical dates in Macedonia as moments defined by the intellectual elite rather than specific political parties.
