Student deaths in Veracruz

Overview

Authorities in Veracruz are investigating several incidents involving the deaths of students. In mid-August, the Veracruz State Attorney General's Office (FGE) began investigating the murders of two Universidad Veracruzana students, Melanie Michelle Méndez Morales and Luis Fernando Hernández Ibáñez, whose bodies were found in a vehicle on the Coatepec–Huatusco highway.

In early September, a third student, 23-year-old Miguel Antonio Espinoza Vega of the Escuela Normal Superior Veracruzana, was found dead on the Xalapa-Veracruz highway in Emiliano Zapata. Preliminary reports indicate he may have been the victim of a hit-and-run after being reported missing on August 31. The FGE and State Police have secured the scene for forensic investigation.
