Student violence incidents in Istanbul

Overview

Incidents of violence involving students have been reported in Istanbul. In September, a 12-year-old student in Arnavutköy was assaulted by three peers; the victim reportedly pleaded for mercy due to epilepsy. Police detained three suspects following the incident, which was captured on video.

In October, a more severe attack occurred at Şeyh Şamil İmam Hatip Ortaokulu in the Başakşehir district. On the morning of October 6, 2026, a 15-year-old student from Küçükçekmece Fahrettin Kerim Gökay Anatolian High School entered the premises wearing her own school uniform and reportedly stabbed students indiscriminately.

Minister of Education Yusuf Tekin confirmed that 10-year-old Eslem Sare Bulut died from her injuries. While eight students were initially reported injured, several others were noted to be in critical or serious condition.

In response, the Ministry of National Education suspended all educational activities at the school for two days. The Ministry of Interior has appointed a civil inspector and a police inspector to investigate, and authorities have launched both judicial and administrative investigations. The suspect has been detained. Additionally, the Turkish Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) has imposed a broadcasting ban on news coverage related to the attack to protect the investigation and public order. The incident has sparked renewed calls from educators and unions for enhanced school security measures and professional security personnel in educational institutions. Psychosocial support is being provided to students, teachers, and parents.
