Suspected homicide-suicide on Italian A1 motorway

Overview

Authorities are investigating a suspected premeditated homicide-suicide on the A1 motorway near Barberino di Mugello involving 45-year-old Lorena Isceri and her 36-year-old ex-partner, Federico Vella.

Preliminary reconstructions suggest Vella ambushed Isceri at her home in the Rifredi district of Florence, assaulted her, and bound her using electrical ties and adhesive tape before forcing her into the trunk of an Audi Q3 SUV. While being transported, Isceri reportedly used a mobile phone found in a backpack to place several calls, including a 20-minute emergency call to 112 and a call to a friend. During these calls, she reportedly told operators, ‘I have been kidnapped, he wants to kill me.’ This enabled police to track the vehicle via phone signal to the Alteta viaduct near Barberino del Mugello.

Investigators believe Vella stopped on the emergency lane, where he is suspected of throwing Isceri from the bridge before jumping to his own death. Before his death, Vella allegedly sent a text message to Isceri's mother stating, ‘It is over, your daughter is dead.’ The Florence Prosecutor's Office has opened a file for voluntary homicide and is evaluating the possibility of premeditation. Evidence found in the suspect's vehicle, including cable ties, scissors, and a sheet, has further supported the hypothesis of a planned act.

In response to the tragedy, the victim's father, Franco Isceri, issued a video appeal to President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, calling for bipartisan action to increase resources for anti-violence centers and implement school educational programs. Prime Minister Meloni and opposition leader Elly Schlein have both responded, expressing solidarity and pledging to work together on solutions to combat violence against women.
