Suspected intrusions against Finnish parliament members
Overview
Finnish authorities have launched investigations into a series of suspected break-ins and attempted intrusions at the homes of approximately 20 members of parliament, primarily in the Helsinki area. Early reports indicated that while no property was stolen or damaged, lawmakers observed anomalies such as doors being left open or interior lights being switched on.
President Alexander Stubb characterized the incidents as ‘an attack on democracy’ if suspicions are confirmed. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo suggested it was ‘very possible’ that a foreign power might be attempting to destabilize the country or influence elections. Security expert Jörgen Holmlund characterized the incidents as a ‘deliberate systematic approach intended for psychological warfare,’ aiming to signal that politicians can be reached even in their private homes.
Some members of parliament described the incidents as an intimidation campaign linked to Russian intelligence services. Specific reports emerged of intruders entering private residences and defecating in bathrooms, which MP Ben Zyskowicz stated represented surveillance and intimidation by Russian espionage services. Speaker of the Parliament Jussi Halla-aho confirmed that investigations have been opened following these reports of unauthorized entries. While Finnish security services noted that such methods are common among authoritarian states, they have not previously been documented in this manner against Finland or other European nations. The incidents have prompted increased security measures and ongoing police investigations.
