Overview

Philipp Preißler, the Mayor of Freiberg, was implicated in a police intervention at a hotel in Leipzig while on a private vacation. During the incident, an individual reportedly ransacked a hotel room and threw objects out of a window, causing minor injuries to two police officers during an arrest attempt. Authorities noted the individual appeared to be in a “psychological state of emergency.”

Following the incident, Middle Saxony District Administrator Sven Krüger announced the suspension of Preißler from his official duties. The decision was made after consultations with the Saxon State Directorate and the city of Freiberg, with the stated aim to protect Preißler while investigations proceed and to ensure administrative stability for the city. Martin Seltmann will assume the administration's duties in the interim.

While investigations into property damage and resistance against law enforcement continue, a disciplinary proceeding against the 41-year-old official is being initiated. Preißler, a representative of the Freie Wähler party, had only officially taken office in June following a contested election.

As of late August, the situation has evolved into a political crisis. Local supervisory authority head Conrad Wolowski stated that a special city council meeting yielded no new information regarding the incident or the investigation. Preißler has since disappeared from public view, and authorities report they have had no contact with him. While he remains the mayor of Freiberg, the service ban remains in effect.
