Suspension of Zacatecas federal judge

On October 7, the Judicial Discipline Tribunal (TDJ) suspended María Citlallic Vizcaya Zamudio, head of the Second District Court in Zacatecas. The suspension was reportedly based on alleged irregularities in amparo procedures.

The National Association of Circuit Magistrates and District Judges (JUFED) condemned the move, suggesting the disciplinary action might be linked to rulings that caused discomfort to Zacatecas Governor David Monreal. These rulings included decisions regarding the suspension of bullfighting, the defense of rights for retirees and pensioners, and a provisional resolution concerning the appointment of the head of the State Superior Audit Office.

Following the suspension, civil society organizations, unions, and federal deputy Noemí Luna demanded transparency from the TDJ. Critics and lawmakers expressed concern that the lack of public information regarding the legal grounds for the suspension indicates political pressure. They argued the tribunal may be acting as a tool for political control, given that the judge’s previous decisions impacted major government projects and pension reforms.
