Sustainable development and education initiatives in Crete

Overview

In September 2026, Crete hosted various initiatives focused on sustainable development and environmental education.

The 23rd Euracademy Summer Academy was held in Anogeia, within the Psiloritis region. The event gathered European stakeholders to discuss ‘Protected Areas: Opportunities and Challenges for Sustainable Rural Development’. Regional Councilor Giorgos Alexakis advocated for a model of ‘protection through sustainable development’ to balance environmental needs with local economic and social requirements.

Following this, the Orthodox Academy of Crete announced its 2026–2027 educational programs. These modules include environmental education regarding the climate crisis, agriculture, and food security, as well as interactive learning centered on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
