SUTEYM protests regarding René Palomares Parra

Overview

Members of the Single Union of State and Municipal Workers (SUTEYM) in Naucalpan have initiated protests at the State of Mexico Attorney General's Office (FGJEM) to demand the arrest of René Palomares Parra.

Palomares is accused of the murder of photographer Luis Fernando Cosgaya Herrera, known as ‘Peruzzi’, which occurred two years ago during a union meeting in Toluca. While initial reports suggested the victim was caught in crossfire, video evidence reportedly indicates the shooting was a direct attack. Additionally, Palomares is accused of attempting to kill his brother, Tomás Palomares Parra, the current SUTEYM leader in Naucalpan, during an attack in August 2024.

Protesters have expressed frustration over the suspect's ability to remain at large despite an active arrest warrant and a 300,000-peso reward. Allegations of corruption and bribery have been raised, with union members claiming the suspect has been previously detained and released. Demonstrators have also noted inconsistencies in the investigation, such as the case file being held in central offices rather than standard departments, and have warned of further mobilizations if authorities do not act.
