Sylvester Stallone biopic production

Overview

The biographical film ‘I Play Rocky’, directed by Peter Farrelly and produced by Amazon MGM Studios, chronicles the early career of Sylvester Stallone. The narrative focuses on Stallone’s period of financial hardship and homelessness during the 1970s, specifically his determination to write and star in the script for ‘Rocky’.

Anthony Ippolito stars as Stallone, portraying his refusal to sell the screenplay to producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff unless he was cast as the protagonist. The film explores how Stallone maintained creative control over the character despite facing skepticism regarding his speech patterns and auditioning for minor roles. It also depicts his personal life, including his relationship with Sasha Czack and his bond with his dog, Butkus.

Following its presentation at the Rome Film Fest, where the film was released in Italy under the title ‘Rocky sono io’, Anthony Ippolito has received praise for his “uncanny physical and vocal mimicry” in the role. During the festival, Ippolito was honored with the Progressive Award for his career.

Following a positive reception at the 2026 Toronto Film Festival, Amazon MGM Studios released a trailer for the film. The updated narrative highlights Stallone’s journey as a nearly bankrupt actor facing partial facial paralysis. The production features an ensemble cast including Matt Dillon as Stallone’s father, Stephan James as Carl Weathers, AnnaSophia Robb as Sasha Czack, and Toby Kebbell. A new trailer emphasizes Anthony Ippolito’s eighteen-month physical transformation to capture the actor's likeness and mannerisms. The biopic is scheduled for a theatrical release in the United States starting November 6, 2026, with an expansion on November 20.
