Syrian diplomatic and aviation reintegration

Overview

Following the overthrow of the Assad regime in December 2024, Syria has begun restoring diplomatic and civil aviation links with the international community.

Diplomatic efforts include the reopening of embassies in Damascus and Tripoli, Libya, after 14-year closures. Denmark has officially reopened its embassy in Damascus, with the Danish government pledging $76 million in aid for stabilization and refugee return. In Libya, Syrian and Libyan officials agreed to reactivate a joint higher committee and discussed expanding cooperation in security, trade, and energy.

In the aviation sector, Syrian Airlines has commenced expanding its direct flight network to Europe, including service between Damascus and Copenhagen.

Regional connectivity has further expanded through flydubai, which is participating in the Syria Travel Show in Damascus in late September 2026. The airline currently operates three daily flights connecting Dubai to Damascus International Airport. Additionally, as of July 2026, flydubai has resumed daily nonstop service to Aleppo International Airport, marking the return of flights to the city after a nearly fourteen-year hiatus. These routes utilize Dubai International Airport as a transit hub to provide access to over 125 international destinations.
