Syros cat welfare volunteer program

The NGO Syros Cats is organizing a volunteer program on the Greek island of Syros to care for stray and rescued cats. Participants are required to work approximately five to six hours per day, five to six days a week, performing tasks such as feeding, cleaning, administering medication, socializing with the animals, and performing general maintenance or minor repairs.

In exchange for their service, volunteers receive free accommodation in a private room within a shared house, breakfast, and access to basic utilities including water, electricity, and internet. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, though recent requirements specify candidates should preferably be aged 25 or older, be physically fit, possess functional English skills, and hold international insurance. While basic amenities are provided, volunteers are responsible for their own travel costs and additional meals. Children and pets are not permitted, though the program is open to couples and remote workers if they can adhere to the refuge’s schedule.

Candidates with veterinary knowledge or experience with feral cats are preferred. Applications for the January to June 2027 period are scheduled to open on September 1, 2026. Applications for the July to December 2027 period are expected to open in November 2026.
