Taiwan celebrates National Day with fireworks and drone show

Overview

Taitung County hosted the Republic of China’s National Day celebrations on October 10, 2026, marking the return of the region’s fireworks display after a nine-year hiatus. Themed ‘The World’s Ark: Austronesian Taiwan,’ the event was designed to highlight Taitung’s role as a central hub for Austronesian culture.

In Taitung, the celebration featured a massive fireworks display at the Beinan River estuary, utilizing between 15,100 and 19,000 shells. The festivities included an orchestral score by singer ABAO and a ‘South Island Party’ at Taitung Coastal Park, featuring musical performances by artists such as Shen Wen-cheng, Ye Chui-ling, and the group Nine One One.

During the festivities, Taitung County Magistrate Rao Ching-ling expressed gratitude to President Lai Ching-te and Legislative Yuan President Han Kuo-yu for selecting the region as the host. Rao noted that the leadership’s support for the eastern region was demonstrated through recent visits and the use of Taitung-sourced items in official state gifts.

Simultaneous celebrations took place in Taipei, where Taipei 101 hosted a 14-minute technological art performance themed ‘Onward Taiwan.’ This display utilized 600 drones to create various patterns, including imagery of a hotpot. Taipei 101 Chairperson Chia Yung-chieh clarified that the hotpot design was a creative concept intended to represent ‘freedom of choice and diversity,’ rather than a political reference.
