Taiwan energy security and CPC Corporation financial status

Overview

Taiwan is pursuing long-term energy security through negotiations with U.S. developers for an Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) project. The proposed deal involves purchasing 6 million metric tons of LNG annually, with potential investments of up to $4.4 billion and a possible supply start date in 2032.

These procurement efforts occur alongside significant financial challenges for the state-owned CPC Corporation. Officials have warned that cumulative losses could reach NT$127.6 billion if supplementary budgets are not approved, a figure nearly equal to the company’s total capital.

To mitigate the impact of rising global oil costs and stabilize domestic living expenses, the government has expanded excise tax reductions. CPC Corporation has been absorbing significant costs per liter for gasoline and diesel to maintain current domestic fuel prices, totaling approximately 30.37 billion TWD in absorbed costs since February 28.
