Taiwan NHI rehabilitation ward pilot programs
Overview
Taiwan has initiated pilot programs for National Health Insurance (NHI) rehabilitation wards to bridge the gap between acute medical treatment and long-term care. These programs aim to facilitate functional recovery and prepare patients for a safe return to their homes and communities.
In southern Taiwan, Qishan Hospital launched a pilot in collaboration with the Kaohsiung City Government and the National Health Insurance Administration. This initiative integrates specialized wards and simulated home environments to promote medical equity and address the needs of an aging society.
Similarly, the Taipei Veterans General Hospital Yuanshan Branch has introduced a pilot program titled ‘New Milestone in Rehabilitation, Hope for Returning Home.’ As the only selected hospital in Yilan for this national pilot, the facility utilizes a ‘life-scenario’ approach to train patients in daily activities, such as dressing and moving, to ensure they can return to their families with dignity.
