Taşköprü garlic promotion and development
Overview
In late July 2026, a delegation from Turkey’s Taşköprü district visited Spain’s Las Pedroeras International Garlic Fair to promote its GI-protected garlic. On 4 August, the district launched the 36th International Taşköprü Culture and Garlic Festival in Kastamonu Province, a six-day event that drew tens of thousands of daily visitors, causing significant traffic congestion and crowded pedestrian areas.
The festival featured various competitions, including livestock contests and a garlic-bunch competition won by İsmail Demirtaş, Mehmet Acar, and Hüseyin Altan. Cultural activities included a kite festival at the ancient Roman site of Pompeiopolis and an exhibition of archaeological artifacts.
A highlight of the concluding celebrations was the "Garlic Beauty" contest, which included participants from Colombia, South Korea, Russia, North Macedonia, and Northern Cyprus. Marian Penagos from Colombia was crowned the winner, while actress Aliye Uzunatağan was named the festival queen.
The festival concluded with a massive final concert attended by approximately 40,000 people, featuring performances by Turkish pop artists Bengü and Edis. During the event, local officials presented performers with garlic crowns, a regional symbol. Throughout the festivities, local officials emphasized the event's importance for regional tourism and the promotion of the district's economic and cultural heritage.
Earlier in the month, officials also announced a US$2.15 million Garlic Green Storage and Compost Integration project, 80% financed by the World Bank, intended to provide climate-resilient infrastructure and digital traceability for approximately 4,000 producer families.
