Tamaulipas electoral and judicial preparations

The 2026–2027 electoral process in Tamaulipas is progressing through administrative and preparatory stages. The Electoral Institute of Tamaulipas (IETAM) reported that over 1,000 applications were received for district and municipal councils, exceeding initial expectations.

As the documentation review continues, IETAM has set a strict deadline for 529 applicants to resolve observations, omissions, or inconsistencies in their files. Juan José Ramos Charre, president of the General Council, emphasized that there will be “no extensions,” and applicants who fail to rectify their documentation by the Friday 4:00 PM deadline will be disqualified. This review is part of a broader process involving 1,694 citizens. Following this, the Organization Commission is scheduled to publish lists of qualified candidates by September 4.

The selection process will include a general knowledge exam to be administered between October 15 and October 20 across six locations: Nuevo Laredo, Matamoros, Reynosa, Ciudad Victoria, Mante, and Tampico. To ensure impartiality, the exam will be developed, reviewed, and graded by the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav) of the National Polytechnic Institute.

In parallel, the Electoral Tribunal of Tamaulipas (TRIELTAM) has begun intensifying training for staff and magistrates to prepare for the upcoming elections, which include the renewal of 43 mayoralties, 22 local deputy seats, and eight federal deputy seats. Additionally, the state judiciary is seeking the appointment of three new judges to manage increased workloads and the transition of labor justice functions.
