Tamaulipas university faculty leadership dispute

A dispute has emerged regarding the leadership selection process at the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences within the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas in Victoria. The controversy began when a journalist and lawyer used social media to advocate for female candidates, using the slogan ‘Es tiempo de mujeres’ (It is a time for women) to argue for historical justice. These posts included allegations that the current director was obstructing female candidates from seeking the position, though critics noted a lack of evidence for such claims.

In response, the university Rector, Dámaso Anaya Alvarado, clarified that the election requirements and the call for elections are under the jurisdiction of the faculty’s Technical Council and its academic community. To prevent suspicions of irregularities during his reelection bid, the current director, Eddy Izaguirre Treviño, has requested to step down from his post to register as a candidate.

Furthermore, local government entities have reportedly requested that the Rector implement an affirmative action policy to restrict the election to women, citing the faculty’s 60-year history of male leadership.
