Tamil Nadu political resignation probes

In early July, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) asked Tamil Nadu’s governor to order a Directorate of Vigilance and Anti‑Corruption investigation into accusations that senior MDMK leaders tried to persuade two MDMK legislators to resign, allegedly offering cash bribes. Police also detained a YouTuber and two local DMK functionaries accused of offering up to ₹15 crore to a Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) MLA to switch parties.

Later in July, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly speaker scheduled fresh personal hearings to scrutinise the resignations of four former AIADMK legislators. The inquiry, which also summoned AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami, aims to determine whether the resignations were voluntary and comply with constitutional disqualification rules. The hearings follow a disqualification petition after a group of AIADMK MLAs voted for the TVK‑led government.

Both events reflect a widening focus on alleged inducements and procedural compliance surrounding recent MLA resignations across multiple parties in Tamil Nadu.
