Tamworth Regional Skywalk opening and safety incident

Overview

The Tamworth Regional Skywalk, an $18 million tourist attraction featuring 1.5 kilometres of elevated walkway, held its grand opening on August 29 with community celebrations and local festivities.

Following the opening, an elderly woman in her 80s sustained minor injuries to her head, back, shoulder, and arm after falling approximately 1.5 metres onto rocks from the structure. While the Skywalk includes railings in many areas, the Tamworth Regional Council noted that certain sections do not require safety railings under design standards, though a handrail is provided on at least one side to maintain a “natural bushwalk experience”. The woman was transported to Tamworth hospital in stable condition.
